What is DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide)?

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is sold as a solvent in Canada and many other countries because of its unique properties as a highly polar, aprotic solvent. It has the ability to dissolve a wide range of polar and nonpolar compounds, including water-insoluble substances such as fats and oils, making it useful for a variety of industrial and scientific applications.

A Russian and American collaboration behind DMSO?

DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) was first synthesized in 1866 by the Russian scientist Alexander Zaytsev. However, it was not until 1959 when Dr. Stanley W. Jacob, an American medical doctor and researcher, discovered its remarkable properties as a solvent and its potential applications in various industries.
